The First Thanksgiving

It is winter when the Pilgrims land. They sleep on the Mayflower at night. They chop down trees in the daytime. They make houses and a fort. The Pilgrims make beds and tables with the wood. The first winter is long and hard. They run out of food. Many Pilgrims get sick and die.

In the spring they meet a kind Indian named Squanto. He shows them how to plant and grow food. This is how they survive.

In the fall the Pilgrims pick up lots of food from their gardens. They are thankful so they ask the Indians to come for a big dinner. This is the first Thanksgiving.

1.     What do the Pilgrims make with wood?

2.     Tell something about the first winter.

3.     What does Squanto teach them?

4.     Who do they invite for dinner?

5.     Why are the Pilgrims thankful?
